Nestled in the heart of Pleasant Grove and Provo, Utah, lies a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a unique, creative experience: Bonsai Bai Me.
How did Bonsai Bai Me get started?
A long time family friend of ours invited us over one Sunday afternoon to give us a tour of his garden. We showed up to find a garden that exceeded our wildest expectations! Among the beautiful Koi pond and perfectly curated ground cover plants, were immaculate bonsai trees, some even hundreds of years old. That is when the love of bonsai was first sparked within us. We began over the next several years to dabble in the hobby as our personal collection of trees grew. But Bonsai can be an intimidating hobby and it’s hard to know where to start. As our friends and family became more interested we decided it was time to open a space of our own where we could create and enjoy the art of bonsai together. In May of 2022, Bonsai Bai Me was born and every day has been the greatest adventure since!

What is a Bonsai tree?
Bonsai is an ancient Japanese practice of cultivating ornamental trees or shrubs in containers, meticulously shaping them to mimic the space of their full-sized counterparts. At Bonsai Bai Me, this tradition is honored and shared with the local community, offering a blend of education, hands-on experience, and creative expression.

Fun tip- While looking for your perfect tree, make sure to look for the Lady Bug helpers!!
Step 1: Unpotting and Repotting
Time to get your hands dirty!
Once you have hand picked the tree that is calling to you, you will start to un-pot and repot your tree. With the help of your instructor you will remove your tree from its plastic pot and use their tools to get rid of the potting soil and expose the roots beneath the soil.
Who knew you can use chopsticks as gardening tools???
Next you will use the Bonsai soil they provide to repot your tree inside the pot you choose. They will check your soil and make sure it is a healthy consistency for your tree.
Step 2: Trimming
The second step in the process requires trimming. They will explain the way your specific tree grows and how to trim it to inspire fuller growth and health through time. Using tools you will then make cuts to the foliage of your tree, and they are happy to give our recommendations.
Fun tip- When cutting your Bonsai tree, you need to carefully pick where you cut. Wherever you trim your tree, the branch will then split into a Y. This is how you will get your tree to be a nice round shape and full looking.
Step 3: Decorating (My personal favorite step)

The third step of the process allows you a chance to decorate around the base of your tree! They will provide all rocks, moss, pebbles etc. of a wide variety for you to use included in your studio fee! There are 4 different types of rocks with different colors and sizes, 4 different colors of moss and different colored buddhas. (Buddhas are an extra charge)
This step is so fun to watch your beautiful tree transform into your own creation!
Step 4: Learning how to take care of your Bonsai Tree
In this final step they will go over after-care instructions to make sure you leave feeling well prepared to care for your tree. All after-care instructions are also posted on their website for you to refer to as much as needed.
- Watering Schedule: Ensure your tree receives adequate hydration by watering it every 3-5 days. Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to maintain consistency.
- Sunlight Exposure: Position your tree strategically near a sunlit window, ensuring it receives ample sunlight for optimal growth. Keep in mind that your tree should be positioned no more than 6 inches away from a sunlit window to thrive. Avoid moving your tree frequently, as this can disrupt its development and health. Only relocate it when absolutely necessary.
- Trimming Routine: Maintain the shape and health of your bonsai tree by trimming it every 3-4 months. This practice encourages balanced growth and enhances its aesthetic appeal.
- Repotting Schedule: Allow your tree to reach its full potential by repotting it every 1-2 years. Alternatively, if you opt not to repot, refresh the soil every 1-2 years to support the tree’s growth and vitality.
- Fertilization: Maximize the health of your bonsai tree by fertilizing it annually, ideally in April. Additionally, you can provide a supplementary fertilizing boost in July to further support its growth and development.
By following these care instructions, you’ll ensure that your bonsai tree thrives and flourishes, becoming a stunning centerpiece in your home or garden.
Before you depart, seize the opportunity to capture a perfect moment with your new tree against their charming backdrop.
Rest assured, they’ll gladly act as your personal photographer, ensuring you capture the most picturesque angles.
